Wired At The Seaport

Going to see Wire tonight. One of the bands of the original '77 Brit Punk scene, after their first lp Pink Flag, they became a bit too arty for my taste. But they spewed out two of the classic songs of Old School Punk : "12XU" and "Dot Dash". Of course that was 30 years ago, but they have occasionally toured since. They also have a new album coming out called Object 47, so check it out.

And besides, it's a free show at NYC's South Street Seaport and there ain't nothin' wrong with that!

DK's Now More Than Ever!

"This is my home. Home is where the disease is. As long as I stay in America, I'll never run out of subjects for songs."
Jello Biafra
A true American Patriot, Jello Biafra is coming up on his 50th birthday. Dang. Hardcore is getting old. Jello's old band the Dead Kennedys might have been the biggest of the California Punk bands of the early 80's. In fact, they might have been the most famous American Punk band aside from the Ramones. Certainly their name got em press. And their first album; Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables is easily in the top ten punk rekkids of all time. You got "Kill The Poor", "Holiday In Cambodia", "Stealing People's Mail", "I Kill Children" and "Viva Las Vegas" for chrissake. The DK's had it all, the ubiquitous logo, the notoriety, the cleverness in their lyrics and catchy tunes. Their shows were absolutely epic... I saw em many times and they never disappointed.

They were as close to a breakout Punk band in the early 80's as we were gonna get.

My mom absolutely hated that I walked around with a big "DK" on my mc jacket and I had a huge poster on my wall of their In God We Trust cover, with Jesus hanging from a cross of dollar bills.

Ah, youthful hi-jinks!

The In God We Trust Inc lp took them into Hardcore territory as they seemed to court the mosh pit kids. Of course, they did have a song called "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" on the album. Plastic Surgery Disasters brought em back to the classic punk sound and then it all came crashing down with Frankenchrist and the lawsuits inspired by the HR Giger "Penis Landscape" artwork.

I sorta lost interest with them around this time, as the DK shows had evolved into "amateur hour" for wanna be punks. As they were the most famous punk/hc band, all the assholes and jocks would come out for their shows. This was certainly not lost on Jello, and the concerts became sermons, as Jello lectured and berated the crowds.

"never since the nazis have so many people looked and acted the same"
(attibuted to Jello Biafra)

Their last album in the classic line-up was 1986' Bedtime For Democracy.

The band broke up due to legal and money issues soon after. The DK's have toured intermittently with-out Jello over the years, but have mostly reunited in the courtroom over copyright and licensing garbage.

Today's toonage is the Dead Kennedy's demo's from 1978. Many of the songs later appeared on the Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables lp.

Alot of it is pretty raw, but hey, it's 30 year old Dead Kennedy's demo's! How they even still exist is a miracle.

And as an added bonus, the great "Too Drunk To Fuck" and the sorta spoken word (but still relevant) "Kinky Sex Makes The World Go Round".

Have at em.

Gimmie Noise

Yeah I Know I Look Like Hell
Smokin' And Drinkin' I'm Feelin' Swell

Favorite Thing - The Replacements
(my buddy Jeff took this picture of the Replacements at Maxwells in 1986!)

Caterwaul Of Sound v 4.0 tonite. Can't fucking wait. The rock must be unleashed. It's hard to get our little gang of fuck-ups together, due to work/family/etc; so when we do, it's a beautiful thing. None of this stuff tonite, but we'll make up for it, I suspect.

(edit) - and we did- I got to play a longer and more psychotic version of Interstellar Overdrive than Syd Barrett ever did. And I played it on guitar... and I'm a bass player!

Here's some bands ripping the shit out of other band's classics.

Yo La Tengo - Favorite Thing (Replacements)
The Polyphonic Spree - Lithium (Nirvana)
Rancid - Cheat (The Clash)
Lunachicks - Noise Annoys / Promises (Buzzcocks)
Pennywise - Touch Of Grey (Grateful Dead)
Foo Fighters - Gas Chamber - (Angry Samoans)

Kermit To The Rescue

This makes me happy that someone with media access is taking on Bush.

And this story is absolutely horrifying.

The worst thing is, a year from now, we'll probably look at this as the good old days. We haven't hit rock bottom yet, fellow travelers.

The following might cheer you up, it made me smile.

Happy Birthday Joey Ramone

Today (May 19) would have been Joey Ramone's 57th birthday. The Ramones are my favorite band. I am from the same town as them and my mom actually went to the same high school that Joey did. in fact, the Ramones are more family to me than a band. Actually they are more family to me than alot of my family is!
To say that the Ramones have been an influence on me would be an understatement. In fact, they saved my life. Once I heard the Ramones music, I stepped through a door that (I hope) changed my attitudes toward music, culture and lifestyle for the better.
The Ramones were "my" band. Growing up, I took alot of shit for liking Punk Rock (yeah, so did you I'm sure).
When Joey died, it was one of the three major musical "hits" I've taken. John Lennon's murder (horrible), Jerry Garcia's death (expected) and Joey (just plain sad).
Click on this, and you'll be directed to all of my RAMONES posts. There's alot of songs and live shows to choose from. Happy birthday Joey and Gabba Gabba hey!

Milk, Milk, Lemonade

This one comes by way of a cyber-sation I had with Sugar Mag. It started out with my aversion to cheeses that are not of cow origin. I do not want ANYTHING to do with goat cheese (or milk) or sheep cheese. That stuff is just too funky for the Nomad clan. Feta cheese is pretty popular, but keep it away from me. And, although I am a former vegeterian, I never got off on that soy cheese stuff either. I want my MOO milk products. I still won't eat a cow, but I got no problem imbibing their lactate! And you know, Keef Richards doesn't eat cheese at all! And if that dude puts everything else in his body, and won't eat cheese, maybe he's on to something!

So, then it got to talking about Human milk. Is there anything wrong with adults drinking human milk (or making ice cream or cheese from it)? After all, it's really healthy and the preferred beverage of choice for infants. So, what's the taboo on grown ups taking a swig?
I look at it as sort of cannibalism. I never had to nerve to partake when I had the opportunity in the past. Which is sort of ironic, when you think about all of the other bodily fluids that are generally exchanged between folks. And yet, here you have something that's good for you and people stay away!

Groundhog Day

One of those days in which everything felt the exact same way as the day before. Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged the brush across my head, etc. The bullshit commute, complete with the usual subway hassles. The dead zone of work. Another loss by these guys. More crap from this shrew. It's not even 10 am and I'm ready bail out, hit a beer distributor and head to the beach.

Veneratio Thy Matris

"Well, you came into this world naked,
screaming and covered in blood
who was there to wipe you off and give you your first hug?
And it took a couple years to figure out how to not shit in your pants
but someone was there to clean you up and powder off your rash"

With Mother's Day around the corner, Bleedin Out takes time to honor the women who's wombs we sprung forth from. Musta been nice in there, all warm and wet and safe.

And leave a comment! Your mom would want you to!

The First Shot Across The Bow

Today, Nazzette Jr. comes down the stairs ready for school in shorts that I wouldn't let her wear in our backyard, much less in a place of higher education. Shorts that you would normally see this kind of female wear.
So, back up the stairs she went to change. The kid was pissed, but too bad. She's a really good kid (isn't even boy crazy yet), but if you don't nip this crap in the bud, they turn into this.

Prudish perhaps? Fuck yeah. If you don't keep these kids on the straight and narrow, well they might turn into me one day! Hold on to your seat Daddy-O, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!

Here (Doesn't) Come A Regular

Just noticed that I have been sober for over a month. That's not by design, it's just that I haven't had any time to tie one on. Fatherhood used to be so easy before the kiddies got hep to Dad's red eyes. Darn those "rat on your folks" lessons they get in school. Mrs. Nomad and I haven't even gotten to see this yet. Been going to alot of baseball games lately. And you can't get drunk at baseball games, since beers are 9 bucks each. And it's bad beer too.
So, it's been the relatively straight and narrow, since Nazz jr and Nazzette jr NEVER GO TO BED! I even had a dream last nite that I was at some Heavy Metal fest and I got busted for getting wasted. When you can't even get high in your dreams, that's just messed up.

Well, here's Planet Unicorn. Why? I don't know. He's on third base.

All The Young...

Billy rapped all night 'bout his suicide
How he'd kick it in the head when he was 25
Speed jive, don't wanna stay alive when you're 25

And Wendy's stealing clothes from unlocked cars
And Freddy's got spots from ripping off stars from his face
Funky little boat race

The television man is crazy
Saying we're juvenile delinquent wrecks
Man I need a TV when I've got T. Rex

Hey brother you guessed I'm a dude

All the young dudes
Carry the news
Boogaloo dudes
Carry the news

Now Jimmy's looking sweet though he dresses like a queen
He can kick like a mule
It's a real mean team
But we can love
Oh yes, we can love

And my brother's back at home
With his Beatles and his Stones
We never got if off on that revolution stuff
What a drag
Too many snags

Well I drunk a lot of wine
And I'm feeling fine
Gonna race some cat to bed
Is this concrete all around
Or is it in my head

Oh brother you guessed I'm a dude

All the young dudes
Carry the news
Boogaloo dudes
Carry the news
