The Great Lost Ramones Song

Slug shoulda been the contender. Originally written for the Rocket To Russia album but unreleased until the All The Stuff And More album, , Slug has been covered by the likes of The Queers, The Huntingtons, and Riverboat Gamblers.

A tale of love lost, it chokes me up everytime.

The lyrics follow-

Lying in bed one summer's night
Everything wasn't alright
Something started crawling on me
A S-L-U-G

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

And I know that if I had her back today
Yeah I know
(I know)
I know
(I know)
Why is it always this way?

Lying in bed one summer's night
Everything wasn't alright
Something started crawling on me
A S--L-U-G

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

And I know that if I had her back today
Yeah I know
(I know)
I know
(I know)
Why is it always this way?

S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G
S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G

Metal Moron

Me and Dave had tickets for Judas Preist. At Madison Square Garden. Of course, this was about 1984. And I was about 18.

And as a teenager, I was going thru a very quick metal phase. Metallica’s “Kill Em All”, Motley Crue, AC/DC, ad nauseum.
So, the opportunity to see Priest was very wunderful.

Or something.

We set out via train for the 2 hour trip into NYC. I was wearing some sort of studded metal vest that my girlfriend lent me. That, plus my Kirk Hammett junior mustache, and Gene Simmons hair, really must have made me look like a babe magnet.
Nazz- 1984 Metal Loser

Of course, acid was involved, as it was in virtually everything in those days.

So... tripping away, we loaded up on booze and hit the show.

This was back in the days of excess (duh) and Priest was no exception. Huge stage sets, Rob Halford in his closeted metal leather glory, riding the motorcycle onto the stage, and the twin guitar attacks of KK Downing and Glenn Tipton shredding.

About three quarters of the way through the show, we started noticing things flying through the air. Dave said something about what a great marketing gimmick Priest had, selling cushions to fly through the air.

The show ends and we grab the subway. I put my token in and Dave jumps in with me.

Bad idea.

A NYC cop busts us and detains us in our LSD glory.

We were definitely going to be arrested until, when we had to produce I.D., it turned out that the cop went to the same Catholic High School as Dave did. So, he told us it was our lucky day and set us free.
Dave smirked something to the effect of “you see, no problem”.

I punched him right in the mouth.

Sandy Recovery Benefit Tonite!

Hey now, if yer in the NYC area, come on out for a good cause tonite (Monday Nov 19). The world famous Punk Metal Karaoke Live Band will be performing down at Fontana's on 105 Eldridge Street in Manhattan tonite starting at 9.

Be the rock star you've always wanted to be and get on stage and rawk out to a Misfits or Zeppelin or AC/DC or Fugazi or Kelly Clarkson or The Clash or one of 270 songs. And drink. Because liquid courage never is a bad idea.

Yours truly will be the host and emcee and I'll be throwing out stale Borscht Belt jokes, show tunes and semi naked gyrations if I get likkered up enough.

Come help the recovery efforts as all proceeds will be donated to Occupy Sandy.

The Rezillos

So, last week, in the midst of the Nor'Easter that was the "dirty sanchez" left by Ma Nature on the East Coast, I ventured out and saw The Rezillos.

Yep- The Rezillos (file under late 70's Scottish Punk/New Wave/Bizarro) relanded their flying saucer and put on a fine show. The only original members I spied were Eugene Reynolds and Fay Fife (resplendent in some sort of leather /vinyl mishegas. ). However, the other band folk were spot on- and I wuz watching the bass player all note to make sure he hit all the great runs that are on those toons.

They played all the hits: "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In", "It Gets Me", "My Baby Loves Good Sculptures" and a head spinning version of Ike and Tina's "River Deep/Mountain High".

A smashing good high energy performance, considering a less than full house (thanks to the fact that 1/2 of Long Island was still without power).

They're touring the USA this month- so catch em when they come to yer town!

Meet The New Boss

Yay!!!!, we survived the Repugnikkkans "regime change" attempt. Thank (insert imaginary deity of yer choice).

But the boss I'm talking about is The Velvet Underground. Been listening to a few "tribute comps":

Unpiecing The Jigsaw: featuring Buffalo Tom, The Wedding Present, James and this Echo & The Bunnyman riff on Foggy Notion:

 and

American Velvet: featuring Frank Black, Mitch Easter, Frank Agnew and this Jonathan Richman epic:

Sing along with Jonathan..........

Jonathan Richman - Velvet Underground
They were wild like the USA
A mystery band in a New York way
Rock and roll, but not like the rest
And to me, America at it's best
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.

A spooky tone on a Fender bass
Played less notes and left more space
Stayed kind of still, looked kinda shy
Kinda far away, kinda dignified.
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.

Now you can look at that band and wonder where
All that sound was coming from
With just 4 people there.

Twangy sounds of the cheapest types,
Sounds as stark as black and white stripes,
Bold and brash, sharp and rude,
Like the heats turned off
And you're low on food.
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.
Like this...

Wild wild parties when they start to unwind
A close encounter of the thirdest kind
On the bandstand playing, everybody's saying
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.

Well you could look at that band
And at first sight
Say that certain rules about modern music
Wouldn't apply tonight.

Twangy sounds of the cheapest kind,
Like "Guitar sale $29.99,"
Bold and brash, stark and still,
Like the heats turned off
And you can't pay the bill.
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.

Both guitars got the fuzz tone on
The drummer's standing upright pounding along
A howl, a tone, a feedback whine
Biker boys meet the college kind
How in the world were they making that sound?
Velvet Underground.

Wild wild parties when they start to unwind
A close encounter of the thirdest kind
On the bandstand grooving, everybody moving
How in the world are they making that sound?
Velvet Underground

My Advice To My Son

Nazz Junior just asked me for advice on what to do when a girl slices, dices and breaks your heart. My advice: "GET USED TO IT".

That is all for now. Tomorrow either brings glad tidings or really bad tidings.
