Tolling for the outcast, burnin’ constantly at stake...

Motherfucker had it right in 1964- and nothing's changed.

Chimes Of Freedom

Far between sundown’s finish an’ midnight’s broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing

Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
An’ for each an’ ev’ry underdog soldier in the night
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

In the city’s melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched
With faces hidden while the walls were tightening
As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin’ rain
Dissolved into the bells of the lightning
Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake
Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned an’ forsaked
Tolling for the outcast, burnin’ constantly at stake
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
An’ the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Through the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
All down in taken-for-granted situations
Tolling for the deaf an’ blind, tolling for the mute
Tolling for the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute
For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an’ cheated by pursuit
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Even though a cloud’s white curtain in a far-off corner flashed
An’ the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting
Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting
Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
An’ for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Starry-eyed an’ laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an’ we watched with one last look
Spellbound an’ swallowed ’til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an’ worse
An’ for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

F-f-f-f-f-f-f-rozen

I had to take a business trip last week, which included flying into Minnesota in sub zero weather on a small little "puddle-jumper" plane (while Otis Redding and Buddy Holly flashed through my mind) and then driving 150 miles in a snowstorm. At night. With no lights on the highway. And the snow flying right into our windshield, making the experience much like traveling into hyperspace.

The driving experience for several hours was very much like this:

as cars were crashed on the highway embankments.

The trip was up to Duluth Minnesota; original home of Bobby Dylan. I had plans to in Minneapolis and do The Replacements/Husker Du "heritage tour", but I was so freaked out by the time I got back to the Twin Cities that all I could do was sit at the bar at the hotel and down copious amounts of Leinenkugel beer. Mmmm beer.

Why anyone would choose to live in such a frigid climate is far beyond my understanding. Here in New York today, it's a balmy 20 degrees. Aaaaaahhhhhh.

I'm Not There

Thanks to all that have sent good vibes my way. It is much appreciated.

One byproduct of my new unemployment is the opportunity to "better" myself. I have been stone cold sober for 10 days and hitting the gym.

Another is that I am taking on-line free courses at MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Amazing that they just give this stuff away.

So, I'll be fit, healthy and well educated on the dole!

I have been networking and have some prospects.. but HOPE IS THE MOST SEDUCTIVE DRUG OF ALL!

And it has been nice to spend extra bonus time with Mrs. Nomad... it's sort of like being in our retirement years, but we can still do things!

Yesterday, I saw the Bob Dylan psuedo-bio flick I'M NOT THERE. Wow. It was breathtaking. As confusing, convuluted, masked and intiguing as the man himself. It's loaded with classic Dylan tunes as several actors (Richard Gere, Kate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger) depict Dylan-esque characters at different times of his life. For example, Kate Blanchett handles the 1965 amphetamine laced Zimmy incredibly.

Highly recommended.

Law Of The Jungle

Nazz jr is a good natured kid. However, when provoked, he's got quite a temper.

As he is now in double digits, and starting a new school next year, I have been ruminating on teaching him how to fight.

While I do not advocate violence, I think it's important for a kid to know how to defend himself. I was a small kid and got picked on (at least till I hit puberty). Despite my dad's best attempts at sending me to Karate school and Boxing gyms, I never had it in my heart to fight back...unless I was really messed with. Than the eyeballs would roll back and I would go for the throat. But that wasn't very frequent. I would have been a happier kid had I the balls to respond violently before that "all of nothing" rage kicked in.

Once I hit 16, i was big enough that no one was messing with me. Over the years (largely thanks to Punk Rock and Alcohol), I've had my share of mosh pit hijinks and pre/post minor altercations; but only a few (thankfully) real knock down drag outs.
But the confidence that I don't have to go running from them should they present themselves has made me a lot more secure.

This mindset has possibly led to more trouble than if I would have remained more passive. But on the other hand, the aggressiveness might have helped me in business as well as personally.

So, my dilemma is whether I should teach the kid some martial arts so he is prepared for the inevitable schoolyard brouhaha, or to let him just work it out himself.

George W. Bush - An Appreciation

As we head into the sunset of the administration of the worst United States President ever, it is important to recognize Dubya for some of his positive accomplishments. He'll be doing it tonight on the tube, but, in the interest of fair discourse, your pal Nazz has some points he may not bring up.

Remember campers, the glass isn't always half empty, sometimes it's half full!

1) The Rapture has not occurred. Granted this is bad news to some of you. But back in the 2000 election, the big fear was that our nation's first "born-again" prez was gonna make this country the Christian Conservative center of the Universe. So far, ain't happened. Try as he might, it ain't happened! What's that you say? What's that about us being in the second coming of The Crusades?

2) Was not Commisioner of Baseball. Baseball has recovered nicely from the steroids/big market/strike scandals. If Gore would have won, there was a good chance Dubya (as a former baseball team owner) could have run baseball. In fact there still is. So I hope Bud Selig is taking his vitamins. Hey, Bush fucked up the country, but at least he left baseball alone!

3) We have not been invaded and conquered by extra-terrestrials. GWB has ensured that we are not under Saturnian or Martian or Neptunian rule since he has been in charge. Yeah sure, the Martians almost destroyed us, but thanks to Bush's "relaxed" standards on the environment, there were plenty of microscopic organisms to destroy the Martians. And we can blame the Japanese for this guy, not the good old USA!

4) As comedy is often born out of tragedy; 8 Years of great material for John Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Saturday Night Live. After all, how much mileage were they gonna get out of Al Gore (although South Park did a great show on Gore.)

5) The knowledge and security that we have seen the worst President we ever will experience. We have nowhere to go but up! (Please make him the worst ever, it can't get worse, can it?).

Gettin' Nowhere, Fast As I Can

Well apathy's got a hold on me
And it won't let go
Tell me your problem, I'll tell you mine
Motherfucker you're gonna know
Well I can go for a change
Go for a jog
Tell me about your rock band
Tell me about your BLOG
Shut up
Shut up
(...with apologies to Paul Westerberg)

This is post number 200. Thanks to the the dozen or so folks out there who bother to read this prose and mayhaps even comment.
The good folks over at Pig State Recon
described this blog as:
..............................................................................................................................

"1/3 cheap jokes,
1/3 whining about his job & sports team & government,
but a full 1/3 is all about this thing we call rock and roll"

..............................................................................................................................
I can live with that.
And I can live with this Husker Du video from 1985.
Fucking rock and roll.

Feelin' Minnesota

I gotta go to Minnesota on business. A three hour flight and then a three hour drive up north. That oughtta be interesting... I hope I don't hit a moose. They have moose in Minnesota, right? I know they got mosquito's.

Since I'll be staying over in Minneapolis, I was gonna do a Husker Du/Replacements tour. Look up their old haunts. Or maybe hang out with Prince.

But instead, I'm gonna hit a Twins game. Always wanted to see where this guy kicked ass.

But I will stay away from this place. Jeez, what a waste of real estate. And to think, people consider it a tourist destination!
Here's some toonage from Minnesota's finest.

Veneratio Thy Matris

"Well, you came into this world naked,
screaming and covered in blood
who was there to wipe you off and give you your first hug?
And it took a couple years to figure out how to not shit in your pants
but someone was there to clean you up and powder off your rash"

With Mother's Day around the corner, Bleedin Out takes time to honor the women who's wombs we sprung forth from. Musta been nice in there, all warm and wet and safe.

And leave a comment! Your mom would want you to!

Friday Grab Bag - Under The Covers

Sick as a dog with a nasty cold (thanks to Nazz jr.) and back problems as sciatica is kicking my arse (also due to the newly invented sport of base/foot/basketball invented by Nazz jr. and myself).

So, no great insights with regard to the world in general or my little corner of it. Just some solid kick ass rawk n rowl cover versions.

Any Day Now, Any Day Now

They say everything can be replaced,
Yet every distance is not near.
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

They say every man needs protection,
They say every man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd,
Is a man who swears he's not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud,
Crying out that he was framed.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Pilgrim's Pride?

We return thanks to our mother, the earth, which sustains us.
We return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with water.
We return thanks to all herbs, which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases.
We return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their light when the sun was gone.
We return thanks to the sun, that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye.
Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit, in Whom is embodied all goodness, and Who directs all things for the good of Her children.

...Iroquois Thanksgiving Prayer, adapted

About 400 years ago, religious fanatics became such pains in the arses that they were thrown out of their country. They sailed across a mighty ocean. Starving and in an unknown land, they were befriended by the natives of their "new world". After a "Thanksgiving" celebration, the descendants of these immigrants systematically destroyed the natives and claimed the continent for their own.
Today we celebrate the original meal by gorging ourselves on tryptophan laced poultry and football.
Happy Thanksgiving!

To Sleep, Perchance To Dream

I am accustomed to sleep and in my dreams
to imagine the same things that lunatics imagine when awake.
~Rene Descartes
"Meditations on First Philosophy"

Having some real sleep related issues as of late. I have always been a very vivid dreamer. But lately, it's been a nite at the frikkin movies everytime I get shut eye. And the dreams are so intense that I'm more tired than ever when I wake up. As an added bonus, I am having trouble differentiating my dream state from reality with regard to my memories. There have been quite a few times where I think back to events and I am sure that things I dreamed about actually happened.
Whether is is stress related or brought on by a significant reduction in my consumption of intoxicants is up for debate.

But that's all my cross to bear, not yours. You benefit from my soporific albatross by getting access to the Bleedin' Out Dream Mix. You got to download the whole thang. While it won't incur slumber, it'll rock ya in yer pyjama's.

Bands My Wife Hates

In the wonderful give and take of marriage; one learns that there are certain "tastes" that are not shared by both spouses. Rarely is this more apparent than in what each participant considers acceptable music. Luckily, one of the things the missus and I have in common is an approximately 80% "hit rate" when it comes to our toonage. Over the years, together, we have enjoyed everything from the Ramones to The Circle Jerks to The Grateful Dead to Aerosmith to Tom Jones. Plus, she still loves Punk Rock (except whiny emo pussy bands, but I can't blame her for that).

Hell, she has even liked some of MY band's music! Now that's true love.

However, there are those certain bands that we don't see eye to eye on. She has veered over to alot of more popular bands over the years (probably as a result of being held captive by my teenage daughter's radio pre-sets). I can't even mention some of the bands she can tolerate (well- how about Evanescence and Lincoln Park for starters).

On the other hand, she makes me change the channel or skip the song whenever George Thorogood or Bob Dylan or (especially) Weezer come on.

Thank the lord that we both agree that Phish, Billy Joel and Phil Collins should all be burned at the stake.

So viva la difference (or somethin' like that).

Here's some stuff that I like but my better half considers aural torture.
