Not Grateful He's Dead - 17 Years Ago Today

The phone rang about 9:30. “Nazz, Jerry died”

“What are you talking about” I answered.

“Jerry died!, it just came over the news!”

“Holy shit! I guess fall tour is cancelled!” I countered.

I immediately bolted from my office and went down to the NPR radio office a couple of floors down. Sure enough, I pulled a news release that gave brief details that Captain Trips had departed a few hours before. I still have the printed teletype announcement somewhere in the Nomad archives.

I called Mrs. Nomad and she said “Well I guess that’s why the radio is playing nothing but Dead tunes”.

The rest of the day was a blur… the messages on rec.music.gdead were flying faster than they could be read. I started getting calls from other heads, while my co-workers were buzzing about (it was not exactly a well kept secret that I was into the Dead).

Later that day, the missus and I went to Central Park… it seemed to make sense to us to go over to Strawberry Fields (the John Lennon memorial area). When we got there, the area was teeming with people, playing songs, weeping and wandering around in a daze.

At some point, MTV was interviewing people and they grabbed us for an interview. I must have been more lucid than the other people they talked to, because they recorded me and the missus long enough that they actually had to change tapes. I remember saying something about how that was the end of The Grateful Dead and it would be a “sham” if the Dead carried on without Jerry under the “Grateful Dead” brand.
The next morning I start getting calls from a lot of people telling me they had seen me interviewed on TV as part of the coverage. I also got a lot of shit from people for “dissing” the Dead for saying they shouldn’t carry on. In fact, people came up to me over a year later at shows and asked me if I was “that guy”.

Fucking hippies.

A couple of days later, (with the “official” wake happening in San Francisco), thousands of people gathered in NYC in Central Park again to celebrate and mourn Jerry. We brought Princess Nomad with us (she was a tot as you can see in the picture. I remember running into people we knew, including one of Mrs. Nomad’s old boyfriends.

A few weeks later, someone told me that I had my letter about Jerry published in Rolling Stone. Only thing was, I didn't remember ever writing a letter to Rolling Stone. But, there it was!

I’ve been to dozens of Grateful dead “offshoot” bands since… Further, The Other Ones, The Dead, Phil & Friends, Ratdog, et al. But of course it hasn’t been the same. Sometimes the shows have been better than the Grateful Dead (much better, in fact).

But it’s never been “as good”. When Jerry died, everything changed.

Chocolate doughnuts and heroin. It killed Jerry. Watch it, kids.

Oh, how I long for the days when my worry’s were only copping a ticket to the next Dead show!

4 Year Anniversary

Just noticed that BLEEDIN OUT hit it's 4th year anniversary. 300,000 hits (of course- it could be just one person (thanks mom) hitting refresh 300,000 times) over that period. Not bad.

Considering that I started this thang to exorcise; and quite often, exercise my demons; it's been a long strange trip. Or something.

4 years of (as someone once so aptly described it) of 1/3 music, 1/3 bitching about the government and 1/3 whining about my life. On the bright side, I've cyber-met some great people. I've also been able to write... which back in college was supposed to be my vocation. And, I have no doubt that this here outlet has kept me on this mortal coil, as the "bad thoughts" have had somewhere to be deposited.

Thanks to (any?) all of you who have commented, downloaded and read this stuff.

It's been "Bleedin Out" of my mind, heart, soul and veins. Hope I never run out. And long may YOU all run.

He's (still) Gone

15 years ago today, Jerry Garcia became one of the actual dead. Whatever your opinion of the man and his band; it cannot be denied that Garcia had a major tranformative effect on music and culture.

R.I.P. Captain Trips, my life was enriched by your presence in it.

Lookin' High, Lookin' Low

It's finally summer (or something) in the northern hemi. Waking & Baking. Music. Beer. Sun. Pool. Backyard. I've decided it's a Grateful Dead and Superman comics weekend. If I get motivated, maybe we'll hit the beach too.
Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

ps- the picture above was taken of me playing a show last year. It's my favorite picture of me. Ever.

Look On Up From The Bottom

An interesting week that featured an excursion to the slammer, a rollicking version of Rush's Spirit Of Radio, much in the way of intoxicants, a viewing of Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, and listening to alot of Grateful Dead. And dropping a thousand dollars on a new washing machine and car repairs.

The new Dead album from a Philly 1989 show is pretty good. They rocked the show, and the sound quality and song selection is as good as yer gonna get. Listen to it for Free, here.

And Beyond is soooo much trashy Faux Hippie fun... I love the Phil Spector character going homicidal at the end!

C is for Cookie

A friend of mine gave me a chocolate chip cookie yesterday. This was a special cookie, provided by the state of California. As such, it contained "medicine". California is (I believe) the only state in the union that allows weed to be "medicine".

"Wait until after work, Nazz", I was advised. Yeah, right. I attacked it like I was the cookie monster.
About an hour later, I felt it coming on. The high lasted about 6 hours. As my dedication to science is so great, I refrained from any other intoxicants during this time. The buzz seemed to be alot more "spacy" rather than physical. However, I did pig out a whole lot once I got home, so I guess the posit that it increases appetite was true. Maybe it's some sort of "munchie strain".

It's absolutely absurd that medical marijuana is not available for consumption by anyone who needs it. Don't even get me started on why the shit is illegal to begin with. The drug war is a complete failure. Let's use our resources on helping people, not persecuting them.

And for your Friday... here's a poem:

Tina Louise

You always seemed
like too much work
And MaryAnn was low maintainance

And when we finally met
Over drinks and madness
You were too old

And you still wouldn't fuck me

(More than) A Touch Of Grey

So, the other day, on a lovely evening over beers, the missus informs me "y'know, if you're going to ever start coloring your hair, it's time to do it, it's really turning grey".

And a WTF moment arrives.

All right, so I am the proud father of a 15 and 11 year old. And I have been married 21 years. But when did I get old? When did people start calling me sir?
Aren't I usually wearing torn jeans and a rock or beer t-shirt? Aren't I usually wearing a bandana or baseball cap? Aren't I the most immature, juvenile adult on the planet?

Wait a minute... I'm an adult?????

When did this aging crap occur?

So, my back constantly hurts. So, my knees give out after running a mile or so. So, I need a couple of extra hours sleep after my usual binge. I'm still King Of The Night-time World, aren't I? I can still out-party anyone I know. In the end, it'll be me and Keith Richards left. Or something.
I used to get so pissed off when I had to show proof of age. Now, the rare occasions I get proofed, I'm actually thankful.

Yeah, I know it beats the alternative. It is NOT better to burn out... despite what this guy says. And each day brings another entry into my scrapbook of madness.

I think I'll pass on the hair tinting; honey. I'm gonna ride on what brought me to this point.

PS- Hey you darn kids, get off my lawn!

Panic! It's What's For Dinner!

So awesome! It's starting! Egypt is killing their livestock! Mexico is shutting down! Our Vice-President is afraid to go on the subways! I've seen people in the streets with masks!

When do the mass suicides begin?
When do the riots start?
When do the fundamentalists start the "end of days" talk?

Oops, I guess they already have!

Pretty soon, companies are gonna start closing down to "protect" our employees through this hazard. Guarantee, it will be without pay; too!

Bring Out Your Dead

OK, so I was wrong. No not about the waterboarding!
About The Dead

What a show at Madison Square Garden Saturday nite. Warren Haynes ain't Jerry, but he's close enough for rock n roll.

The first set focused on the Garcia/Hunter ouerve- plus a Cassidy for another fallen icon.

The second set... all pre '73, with a real bias towards "Anthem Of The Sun". The Gimme Shelter was everything that you wouldn't expect it to be... it freakin' rocked.

Whatever you want to say about the aura, emotion and vibe that Garcia brought to the game has to be weighted against the lack of energy, imagination and creativity that the Grateful Dead also suffered throughout their last years.

There have been so many shows over the past 14 post-Jerry years that kicked the crap over the 90's GD.
The MSG was certainly one.

On to New Jersey!

Still Truckin'?

I have been strangely ambivalent about the upcoming Dead tour. As a vet of hundreds of Grateful Dead and assorted line-up shows; my interest should be higher than it is.

Initially, when The Dead announced that tickets (except for behind stage) would be in the environs of $100 a pop, I was disgusted. $100? When did Jerry and Pigpen re-join? I understand that the boys are getting older, and their 401K's probably tanked like the rest of ours did, but jeez... a hundred clams for what was being passed off as The Dead? No thanks. Funny thing is... if tickets were half that, I probably would have bought tickets for all four local shows!

The other aspect is the arena experience. Weir and Lesh have been touring on their own for years, usually in small theaters, where getting up close was easy. To sit in the enormo-dome and hear crappy sound and deal with all of the other hassles of arena shows seems to be a little over the top for The Dead these days.
I wasn't surprised that the 4 NYC area shows sold out. But, I am wondering what percentage of people going are doing it of nostalgia, how many are doing it for the music (and possibly weren't old enough to see Garcia) and how many are just going to get wasted.

Based on early reports, the band is playing well and Warren Haynes can certainly be considered on the short list of guitar players who are capable of getting a Jerry vibe. There appears to be a "scene" as morons of every age are doing the "whippit/lsd/mushroom/miracle" shtick. Not to disparage the "Phish-Dead-heads", but yecch, put some shoes on, take a shower and grow up already.

One of the shows is literally in walking distance to my house. However, I have other plans. There was a time that NOTHING would have kept me from a Dead show. I am going to one NY show (free tickets for the Missus and I) and depending on how I like it and how cheap I can find a ticket, I might go to one of the NJ shows. Times are tough, and throwin' down so much money is a tough call. Especially how there are other old time bands I wanna see (The Damned & X).

It'll be fun to see what passes as The Dead again, but I just don't have that spark anymore. Of course, the day of show I will probably be bouncing all over the place. At least I hope!!!!!!

George W. Bush - An Appreciation

As we head into the sunset of the administration of the worst United States President ever, it is important to recognize Dubya for some of his positive accomplishments. He'll be doing it tonight on the tube, but, in the interest of fair discourse, your pal Nazz has some points he may not bring up.

Remember campers, the glass isn't always half empty, sometimes it's half full!

1) The Rapture has not occurred. Granted this is bad news to some of you. But back in the 2000 election, the big fear was that our nation's first "born-again" prez was gonna make this country the Christian Conservative center of the Universe. So far, ain't happened. Try as he might, it ain't happened! What's that you say? What's that about us being in the second coming of The Crusades?

2) Was not Commisioner of Baseball. Baseball has recovered nicely from the steroids/big market/strike scandals. If Gore would have won, there was a good chance Dubya (as a former baseball team owner) could have run baseball. In fact there still is. So I hope Bud Selig is taking his vitamins. Hey, Bush fucked up the country, but at least he left baseball alone!

3) We have not been invaded and conquered by extra-terrestrials. GWB has ensured that we are not under Saturnian or Martian or Neptunian rule since he has been in charge. Yeah sure, the Martians almost destroyed us, but thanks to Bush's "relaxed" standards on the environment, there were plenty of microscopic organisms to destroy the Martians. And we can blame the Japanese for this guy, not the good old USA!

4) As comedy is often born out of tragedy; 8 Years of great material for John Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Saturday Night Live. After all, how much mileage were they gonna get out of Al Gore (although South Park did a great show on Gore.)

5) The knowledge and security that we have seen the worst President we ever will experience. We have nowhere to go but up! (Please make him the worst ever, it can't get worse, can it?).

Better Things

To all of my friends in the great expanse...
Happy New Year and best wishes for a HEALTHY, HAPPY and PROSPEROUS New Year.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Here's wishing you the bluest sky,

And hoping something better comes tomorrow.

Hoping all the verses rhyme,

And the very best of choruses to

Follow all the doubt and sadness.

I know that better things are on the way.

Here's hoping all the days ahead

Won't be as bitter as the ones behind you.

Be an optimist instead,

And somehow happiness will find you.

Forget what happened yesterday,

I know that better things are on the way.

Its really good to see you rocking out

And having fun,

Living like you just begun.

Accept your life and what it brings.

I hope tomorrow you'll find better things.

I know tomorrow you'll find better things.

Here's wishing you the bluest sky,

And hoping something better comes tomorrow.

Hoping all the verses rhyme,

And the very best of choruses to

Follow all the drudge and sadness.

I know that better things are on the way.

I know you've got a lot of good things happening up ahead.

The past is gone its all been said.

So here's to what the future brings,

I know tomorrow you'll find better things.

I know tomorrow you'll find better things.

We Are Everywhere!

Due to a family event, my west coast cousin A. came to town. My cuz was a Grateful Dead insider from the start of the band when she attended the Acid Tests through the 80's. I don't often get to see her, being that she's been a left coaster for many years and I reside in Noo Yawk. As she is a couple of decades older than me, we never had that much in common, aside from an interest in the same band and a free spirit. And I spent much of my life not associating with most of my extended family aside from weddings and funerals (and luckily, there weren't too many of either!)

Anyway, I was aware over the years that she knew the band. For example, her son went to Wavy Gravy's camp and Phil Lesh's wife baby sat for him when he was a young pup. I never capitalized on that relationship (when I think about the years I could have exploited that connection, I want to hit myself in the head!). I went to tons of Dead shows and man, a little bit of balls on my part coulda made for a lot of interesting times. On the other hand, my times were plenty interesting and dangerous enough!

So, my cuz is telling me stories about playing double solitaire with Pigpen and hanging out with Owsley Stanley and told me how she only recently stopped wearing a necklace that Bear had given her many years ago.

She told me a story about how, once at a concert in NY, her friend had made some sort of pills out of Cocaine and THC and how she had given one to Garcia before a show. Garcia later told her that he could barely play and how it was an amazing dose.
I can't be sure, but it might have been this show. You can download it here.

All of this kinda reinforces a couple of things.

1) You never know what your blood might have been up to.
2) We are everywhere!

Plenty Of Nothing

In the throes of the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression, the Dow jumped up over 900 points today. What's it all mean? I have no idea. I don't even look at my 401K since I can't touch it anyway until I'm too old to get any enjoyment out of it!
I am no economics expert, but here in NYC, the restaurants are emptier than Sarah Palin's soul and there seem to be less turista's too. A friend of mine in the service industry says that her bar was pretty barren this weekend.

There are definite signs of massive corporate lay-offs in the next few weeks (just in time for the holidays, Ebenezer).

I guess it was a really good time for me to stop drinking! Those $6 pints sure add up.

We're not recovering from this anytime soon, fellow travelers.

Bread And Circuses

"Nobody's ever gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the general public."
...H.L. Mencken

Tonight, America gets to watch a debate between the two candidates for vice president (aka the person "one heartbeat from the Presidency"). Sarah Palin, the Repugnikkkan's choice, has viewpoints completely abhorrent to myself. Additionally, she has so far shown to be unqualified for the position. The liberal press has had a field day exposing this fact. It appears that McCain and the GOP assumed that the Hillary Clinton factor would swing the "soccer mom" vote their way, despite Palin's most decidedly unfeminist platform.

The Democrat's choice, Joe Biden, a slick Washington insider (despite Obama's cries of "Change") should mop the floors with her.

However, if he appears to be a "bully", that could work against him.
What appears to be a mismatch could work in Palin's favor if Biden attacks her and could result in Palin getting the sympathy vote. Which would be absurd of course, since the last reason someone should get votes is for sympathy.

Unfortunately, I fear that this is all window dressing. The subtle racism against Barack Obama that will be displayed in November is going to tip the election to McCain. Many people in this country actually think that Obama is Muslim and part of a "sleeper cell". Put on Fox News and they make sure to call Obama by his entire name: Barack Hussein Obama.

After Bush stole the election in 2000 and proceeded to systematically destroy the country, I was in shock when he was re-elected in 2004. If the citizens of the United States continue choose Repugnikkkan rule for another four years with McCain/Palin; well then we deserve everything that we get.

Well, tonight should be an entertaining night.
