A Caterwaul of Sound

plus
equals

Tonight should be pretty fun. Me and the droogs are getting together for an old fashioned jam session. And by jam, I mean loud and sloppy renditions of some of our favorites. The addition of vodka and beer and who knows what else should add to the festivities, if not the musicianship!

But, hey, it's Punk Rawk... so the intoxicants are a requirement!
For those of you playing at home, here's some of the the songs we'll be mangling!

More Brains!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has been established that persons who have recently died have been returning to life and committing acts of murder. A widespread investigation of funeral homes, morgues, and hospitals has concluded that the unburied dead have been returning to life and seeking human victims. It's hard for us here to be reporting this to you, but it does seem to be a fact.

Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up.

Zombies fukkin' rule. I absolutely love Zombie flicks, books and comics. Whether it's the "Romero Rules" zombies; or the revisionist "speed demon" types; most of the films are fun.

I'm psyched that Romero is coming out with the 5th of his "Dead" films "Diary Of The Dead". And the "I Am Legend" big budget movie with Will Smith looks cool too (OK- they're not officially Zombies, but it's close enough for rock n roll)!

If you haven't seen all of the following, get yer bad selves to your local vid shop immediately!

And highly recommended is "World War Z- An Oral History". Read recollections from survivors of the Zombie War.

and remember...

They're coming to get you Barbara!

Comics - The Sequel

Since last weeks comic post was well received and some great suggestions were made, I've decided to create a sequel. That's in the best traditions of comics anyway! This movie is getting some good press, but the proof will be in the pudding. Having a substance abuser in the title role of Iron Man is interesting casting, at the very least.

And if the Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight continues the fine work of the original, than the stench of George Clooney's portrayal of Batman might be eliminated forever.

Toonage:

The Replacements - Iron Man (live)
The Avengers - Second To None
The DirtBombs - Underdog
Rancid - Sidekick
Dan Bern - Superman
Latterman - If Batman Was Real, He Would Have Beaten The Crap Out Of My Friends
Paramore - My Hero (Foo Fighters cover)
Ani DiFranco - Superhero
The Bad Plus - Iron Man

Make Mine Marvel!

When I was a kid, you could either be a DC Comics loyalist or a Marvel Comics true believer. We were all firmly entrenched in the Marvel camp.

I absolutely loved the old EC comics like Tales From The Crypt and Haunt Of Fear. But they were collector's items by the time I was a kid. The reprints are great however.

Spiderman, The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and The Silver Surfer had it all over the DC stable. Besides, Superman was a giant pussy and never killed anyone. And this was before Batman became "The Dark Knight" and became more of a vigilante. But Marvel had The Punisher and he was actually looking to shoot the bad guys. And Marvel wasn't afraid to kill off characters like Spiderman's girlfriend Gwen Stacy. Of course, then they had to clone her and Aunt May must have almost died about 300 times, but still; Marvel kicked ass. And Doctor Strange was THE acid comic. He's even on the cover of Pink Floyd's Saucerful Of Secrets

And, the girls in Marvel comics were ridiculously hot (yeah- I know they weren't real; but when you're 14 years old...)

I like the current threads in Spiderman alot... he absolutely kicked the shit out of Kingpin a few issues back and seems to be going into a "vengeful retribution" phase.

Now that I have kids, I get to relive my old comics plus check out the new stuff. The Marvel Zombies line is bad-ass, if a bit silly. Some of the Marvel character movies have been disappointing as well. But, all in all:

The Blimp Takes Flight Again!

With the news that the mighty Led Zeppelin will fly again (at least for one show), college funds and savings accounts are being liquidated to come up with funds to buy a ticket. Let's see, the starting price should be around $1000 for the nosebleeds!

I am hoping that once mssr's Page, Plant and Jones smell the money, they'll do a proper tour.

Here's some songs in tribute to the world's greatest rock n roll band.

Power Pop!

Well, I'm back after a few days in Chicago on business. Lack of sleep due to long hours and a mild case of food poisoning have left it's mark.

But the heck with that!

For a special New Year's gift, I have compiled:

Bleedin Out's Power Pop record!

Yeah, they're mostly pretty obvious tunes, but hopefully they'll be somethin' on it that you don't have in digital format yet.

The ground rules were simple. One song per band and it hadda be a song that you can put on endless repeat... sorta like back in the day when you dropped 45's onto yer rekkid player. And it's a lucky 13 songs.

Hope you enjoy em! They're in one easy to download package.

The songs:

  1. The Records - Starry Eyes
  2. The Only Ones - Another Girl, Another Planet
  3. Superdrag - Sucked Out
  4. The Rubinoos - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend
  5. Redd Kross - Lady In The Front Row
  6. The Raspberries - Go All The Way
  7. Ramones - Sheena Is A Punk Rocker
  8. The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away
  9. Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
  10. Material Issue - Valerie Loves Me
  11. The DB's- Black And White
  12. Cheap Trick - Surrender
  13. Big Star - In The Street

Football... It's What's For Dinner

Ah, today is the start of Football Season! And what's more American than FOOTBALL? Ultra-violence, merchandising and the death grip of corporate control combine into the All-American sport. And much like any corporation, once you're of no use, they cut you off like a diseased appendage. And of course, Beer! Just make sure you don't kill any dogs, or get involved in Las Vegas gunplay and you'll be all right!
It's looking pretty bad for my hometown Giants. We lost our best player to retirement and our coach is on a death watch. As long as these assholes don't win it all, I'll be fine.
And The Jets are looking good; but hey, it's The Jets. So you know that somehow they'll screw things up!

Football... it's what's for dinner.

Toonage:

The Damned - Jet Boy Jet Girl (live)
Material Issue - Jet (live Wings cover)
Baba Brooks - One Eyed Giant
The Misfits - Where Eagles Dare (original single)
Paul Revere and The Raiders - Just Like Me
Anti-Flag - Seattle Was A Riot

Descendents - I Wanna Be A Bear (live)
Meat Puppets - Dolphin Field

Things Fall Apart...

The Second Coming--
WB Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight; somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
