Joey Ramone- Rare recording

Found this on the interwebs- the story from Joey's brother Mickey Leigh:

"One day we drove out to a little studio in Long Island to record a song I know Joey had been dreaming about since we were little kids, Gene Chandler’s “Duke of Earl.” He asked me to play guitar on it. The legendary ‘60s Brooklyn doo-wop band, The Mystics, backed us up. My brother’s love for the song, as well as the music of that era, poured out in his vocal. I love his version, and listen to it often."
(this is from the cassette i walked out of the studio with that day. The producer with the multi-track said it was lost, so that crappy little cassette could be the only copy in existence or, known existence.)

The Great Lost Ramones Song

Slug shoulda been the contender. Originally written for the Rocket To Russia album but unreleased until the All The Stuff And More album, , Slug has been covered by the likes of The Queers, The Huntingtons, and Riverboat Gamblers.

A tale of love lost, it chokes me up everytime.

The lyrics follow-

Lying in bed one summer's night
Everything wasn't alright
Something started crawling on me
A S-L-U-G

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

And I know that if I had her back today
Yeah I know
(I know)
I know
(I know)
Why is it always this way?

Lying in bed one summer's night
Everything wasn't alright
Something started crawling on me
A S--L-U-G

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

I saw her walking in the woods last night
And I knew something wasn't right
S-L-U-G
A no no no no, why'd she have to go-oh-oh-oh?

And I know that if I had her back today
Yeah I know
(I know)
I know
(I know)
Why is it always this way?

S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G
S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G, S-L-U-G

I Don't Care

The Ramones said it best:

I don't care
I don't care
I don't care
About this world
I don't care
About that girl
I don't care
I don't care
I don't care
About these words
I don't care

Sssssummmmerrrrrrrr

Nazz Ramone on the beach in California.
Leather MC jacket (sleeveless) for the summer? Check.
High top sneakers? Check.

It's a huge week at the Nomad house.

Nazz jr graduates middle school and Princess Nomad is graduating High School.

A prouder father there never was- especially as Princess Nomad is getting almost a completely free ride to college- (she sure doesn't take after her parents academically!) We even attended the "Senior Awards" event, where she received many accolades and even some scholarship $$$ from her High School activities!
As a Ramone once said "High School has sure changed since we were kicked out of it"

And it's summer- so the time is right for fighting in the streets. Whoops- not out here in suburbia, where it's more about many beers and wasting away in the backyard. Working out of one's home does have it's perks!

Happy solstice ya mofo's!!!!!!

Magic Mushrooms, Johnny Ramone, & Me

This next one combines New Wave, magic mushrooms and Johnny Fucking Ramone.  Read on, comrades…

Way back in ’81, the youngling Nazz and his pal Steve (via Steve’s hotshit Red Firebird) ventured into big bad NYC to see the Psychedelic Furs. This was well before the John Hughes flicks made em all hot shot and all, but in the big city, they were still pretty popular. Being the young savants that we were (or idiots- it’s a thin line), we did the math and figured: Psychedelic Furs = Hallucinogens. Because we were really smart (or stupid). So, we grabbed ahold of a bag of magic mushrooms and proceeded to ingest them whilst stuck in traffic on the Williamsburg Bridge, alternating bites of the disgusting dried fungi with handfuls of Oreo cookies.

We get in, and have some time to kill before the show begins, so we wander around the area that the show is gonna be in (the old Ritz theater (now known as Webster Hall).

Drinking beers on the street, who do we run into but Mr. Grouchy Punk himself: Johnny Fucking Ramone. He looked exactly as he did on stage, except he had a denim jacket on instead of a leather MC (it WAS August). He also had an umbrella. For some reason, that weirded me out, since I didn’t think Ramones should worry about the rain.

Anyway, we walk right past him and do the head swivel thang. “Holy shit, that was Johnny Fucking Ramone!” we both shouted. So, we immediately ran across the street, doubled back and crossed back so we could walk by him again. This time, we stopped him and… JUST AS THE MUSHROOMS KICKED IN, tried to start a conversation that went something like this:

Nazz: “Ummmmmmm Hi Johnny”

Johnny Fucking Ramone: “Hi”

Nazz: Johnny we love the Ramones you’re in our favorite band I’ve seen Rock N Roll High School a million times when’s you’re new album coming out holy shit you’re Johnny Fucking Ramone oh my fucking god blargh blurgh glarb (cue heavy mushroom madness) blargh gribble blughh”

Johnny Fucking Ramone: We’re recording it now. Doing the tracks and waiting on Joey for the vocals.

Nazz: “Blurgh blurgh blum Psychedelic Furs cool show we’re going to blughh you should come too blargh (eyes rolling in back of skull) you’re Johnny Fucking Ramone”

Johnny Fucking Ramone: “Nah, I got things to do”

Nazz:  “Cool you’re blurgh gragh fucking awesome GABBA GABBA HEY”

Johnny Fucking Ramone: “Yeah see ya” (Johnny Fucking Ramone then makes his escape)

After a few minutes and a couple of more beers, we finally were able to comprehend the magnitude of meeting Johnny Fucking Ramone and we went into the show.

Anyway, here’s an actual link to the concert I found. Listen for yerself- that thump in the background would be me hitting the floor. I do remember them opening in a splash of bright light with “Into You Like A Train”. I also remember passing out drop dead unconscious during I think “Sister Europe” and being revived by my buddy Steve and some hot chick (or it could have been a really big and ugly bouncer ).

The Psychedelic Furs show was cool. But not as cool as meeting Johnny Fucking Ramone.

5 Years

Today marks 5 years that I have been self pleasuring myself on this blog.

I was supposed to be a writer. People who knew me back in school are always surprised that I haven't made it my career. This is a sad representation of what was supposed to be "my calling".

Like pretty much everything else, it's a second rate result of higher hopes and expectations.

When I started "Bleedin Out", I was totally stressed and hoped that this blog would soothe the voices in my head. "Bleedin' Out" was derived from the Roman practice of cutting one's wrists, lying in a warm pool of water and gently dying, as the blood drained from the wounds. Alot like writing.

I guess the benefits of this blog were that it kept me going for five years, got me turned on to some good music, gave me an outlet to bitch and moan, and meet some great folks (that would be YOU). Thanks to anyone out there who has read this blog, and thanks to all who have taken cyber-pen to hand and left a comment. Your comments were my sustenance.

As I have my "Naked Lunch" moment- there's not a whole lot to look ahead to. And things are only gonna get worse.

I have grown older and nothing is very much fun anymore.

The Surfin' Dead

If you want to hang with Nazz this weekend, I'll be on Rock Rock Rockaway Beach surfing the rightous hurricane waves.

I realize that every Mayor in the North East is shitting bricks about the possibility of Katrina redux; but did our illustrious en why cee Mayor Bloomberg REALLY have to shut down all mass transit and order forced evacuations? If this storm is anything less than Armageddon, I think not. What a bunch of fucking pussies we've all become.

And why is that old guy across the street collecting 2 of every animal?

Joey Ramone- 10 Years Gone

There is nothing I could say that would overstate the importance of Joey Ramone to the music that I hold dear to me, the lifestyle I have led and many of the good things in my life. It's a loss that I suspect many of you also feel.

Rest In Peace. I look forward to seeing you on the other side.

4 Year Anniversary

Just noticed that BLEEDIN OUT hit it's 4th year anniversary. 300,000 hits (of course- it could be just one person (thanks mom) hitting refresh 300,000 times) over that period. Not bad.

Considering that I started this thang to exorcise; and quite often, exercise my demons; it's been a long strange trip. Or something.

4 years of (as someone once so aptly described it) of 1/3 music, 1/3 bitching about the government and 1/3 whining about my life. On the bright side, I've cyber-met some great people. I've also been able to write... which back in college was supposed to be my vocation. And, I have no doubt that this here outlet has kept me on this mortal coil, as the "bad thoughts" have had somewhere to be deposited.

Thanks to (any?) all of you who have commented, downloaded and read this stuff.

It's been "Bleedin Out" of my mind, heart, soul and veins. Hope I never run out. And long may YOU all run.

The Strokes Suck

It had been a long time since I had had to even think about The Strokes. But there they were, on this past weekend's Saturday Nite Live (and might I add, that Miley Cyrus was wonderful and actually can act!). Billy Ray... our little girl has grown up.

The previous time I was exposed to these hipster cumwads was at Little Steven's 2004 Underground Garagefest, in which they opened for The Stooges and proceeded to disgust most of the 10,000 plus people who were trapped on Randall's Island with them. Perhaps it was because I spent most of the program playing Ramones songs on my bass, but the second The Strokes, in their sunglassed glory, appeared, I immediately wanted to take my bass and smash it thru the television. I can't stand smug little New York muthafuckers, and The Strokes exemplify everything I hate (and so do you) about New York bands. And, as I have spent my entire (up to now) life in eN whY Cee, I've seen my share of these bands. Additionally, as an added bonus, both of the songs they played absolutely sucked.

I would like to take a sardine can opener and start peeling the lead singer's skin off'; starting from his hipster haircut lined skull down to his knees. I can only pray that these fuckers catch ebola from their model girlfriends.

Anyway, as previously mentioned, I have about 25 Ramones songs to master. And ya know what? They're not all three chords!

Below you'll find OI The Album. Download it and dream about smashing The Strokes skulls in.

Next Stop: Tiger Beat!

We spent Saturday shooting our album cover. Way freaking cool. One of our friends (forever known now as "Damsel Adams") is a professional photographer and worked with us. And it WAS work. As were shooting in NYC, on an unclosed street, we constantly had to stop and scramble as cars drove by (we were shooting in an intersection). It would ruin the surpirse, but the cover is an homage (or blatant rip-off) of a rather well known classic LP.

We WERE going to shoot it exactly where The Ramones first album was shot, but decided against it. However, we did do a classic "band against a brick wall" shot that will soon be posted up in this here gallery. And of course we did the obligatory tribute shot to these guys.

It was really hard work to be a model. Avoiding the self conciousness of being in the camera eye is tough. Especially as how we were all having trouble taking the whole thing seriously. Especially on the "candid" shots that will be for Tiger Beat. Originally I was going to pose with no pants on, but it was damn cold. And shrinkage is a bad thing.

But it was soooo cool as passersby kept looking at us and some people even came up to us and asked if we were a band.

Worn From The Inside Out

I am so vegged out from the usual that I don't even have the capacity to think. Just starin' at the 'puter screen, giggling and slack-jawed.

Here are some perfect videos from my youth. You know where to find the original songs (most likely in yer rekkid collection).

This Is A Love Song

I thought you were the one when I heard "Holidays In The Sun"
come from your bedroom
but my mind started to stray when I saw Youth of Today
mixed with your singles
What's with this Underdog and this GNR EP?
I don't think Hanoi rocks
and I don't want your Paul Stanley
next to my Subhumans gatefold
I'm not trying to be a jerk
but I don't think this record mergers gonna work

But when I saw Christ on Parade,
and This is Boston, Not LA
I knew you were the one

I knew you were for me when I saw the first Vandals EP
I found SNFU and cool I owned that record too
seems we both had Social Unrest and sung "she's a pervert nurse"
we both had the first pressing of "How Could Hell Be Any Worse"

I knew you were the one

So now we got two Earth ADs and we got two Killing Jokes
we got two Adolescents two Peni's and two The Crews
we got two Someone Got Their Head Kicked Ins
we got two Declines, two Damaged
and two Jealous Agains,

I knew you were the one
When I saw Machine Gun Etiquette
I knew you were the one
When I saw the Peace War comp

We got two Articles of Faith, 31 minutes of group sex
A couple of Avengers, and a pair of Out Of Steps
We got two What We Do Is Secret, we got two TSOL's
We got two Freedom Of Choices, we got two Three Hits From Hells

I knew you were the one

I Slept With Joey Ramone

Joey Ramone's brother Mickey Leigh has written a fantastic book about his relationship with his sibling. I Slept With Joey Ramone is equal parts poignant, informative and entertaining. Mickey paints an absorbing picture of what it was like to live with an awkward, OCD ridden misfit who grew up to change the musical world and save rock n roll. If you are reading this blog, than you will certainly enjoy the book Mickey wrote... so, go buy it!
I had the privilege to interview Mickey and present it to you all...

Congrats on the book, it really opens people’s eyes to parts of The Ramones history that was unknown

Well, thank you... And, yes, part of my goal was to give people important insight into the band that they did not get from any of the previously released books- so it's good to know I at least accomplished that.

I grew up in Forest Hills too, I even went to the same Junior High as you… do you think the area that we grew up in molded the band and your sensibilities?

I definitely do believe there is, or certainly was a type of humor indigenous to this particular neighborhood, or at least to a certain faction of people from Forest Hills. Basically the ones who did not meet the criteria of the neighborhood's status quo and hence became the outsiders- which my brother and I, and the others in the Ramones certainly were. I believe that is where the self deprecating and "black" humor derives from, amongst other emotional characteristics prevalent in what became known as a "punk” attitude. We developed a certain blunt, wise-ass style of humor to maintain our sanity, or insanity, depending on who was mentally balanced, or imbalanced on any given days or occasions.

There’s a lot of drama in the book. How difficult was it to dredge up all those old painful memories?

As about as difficult as it gets, since the main characters were my brother and father, who are deceased, my mom who died as I was writing the book, and my friends Johnny and Dee Dee who also died while I was writing the story. The worst was, due to deadlines, I had to write the last chapter, about my brother passing away, practically on the exact day he died. This is even difficult right now as it is April 13th, and I plan on going to the cemetery as I do every year on the day he passed, April 15. Still a tough day for me. But writing about it on the day was excruciating, though I had no choice as the deadline was May 1st. Well, one of the deadlines anyway. I did blow several. This was not an easy, or fast, book to write. The Ramones and Mickey Leigh in London 1976

Joey’s OCD was a closely guarded secret, did you have any reservations about talking about it (even though it really is so central to the book).

I'm not sure how something that was discussed several times on the Howard Stern show and heard by millions of listeners can be deemed as a closely guarded secret. Or how as it was written about by Monte Melnick, other previously published books, and witnessed by hundreds of people it can be considered a secret, much less a closely guarded one. Maybe it was to you, but there is not much in this book that had not been divulged many times before. As per his OCD, I just put it in a different light and explained its development and ramifications in more detail.

What’s the reaction been from your family and friends?

My/Joey's family read the book long before the final editing and were thoroughly impressed, moved and delighted with the outcome, as were many of Joey's and my mutual friends, including his closest ones. They were all totally supportive and love the book.

How does a band with four truly separate personalities, exist in such close quarters for so long?

Well, considering Tommy quit after three years, I don't know if you could say it was for "so long." After that, there were three other members that came and went. You must realize that the non-original members were hired. My brother and Johnny were not about to give up the only thing they loved to do, knew how to do, made a success out of, and was what kept them financially stable. How much pleasure they derived from it after a certain extent was different for each of them and not for me to gauge.

With Johnny and Joey so hostile to each other, how were you able to bridge the gap, at times it appears that you were closer to Johnny than you were to Joey.

Johnny and I were best friends and bandmates when I was 14 and he was 21. Actually Tommy was in that band as well for a period. But at the time you are referring to I was not really friendly with Johnny anymore. Unfortunately, no one was able to bridge that gap and it remained an open sore until the day my brother died.

When are you gonna start STOP back up, you guys kicked ass.

Working on it as we speak. The first scheduled STOP show will follow a book reading in Woodstock on June 25th, then STOP will get back into action.

DoDo you listen to punk anymore? What bands?

Do you mean like the kind of punk that the Jonas Brothers, Ashlee Simpson and Justin Beiber play? Not sure if there is any real punk left, but I listen to everything and just keep hoping someone will do something different. ANYTHING!

What’s next?

Tomorrow.
