An Idiots' Guide To Backyard Fun


Out in suburbia, it was time to embark upon the lawn work and start up the grill.

Here's some gardening advice. If you you are going to use a weed wacker, don't do it barefoot. Because I did and when the wire that decapitates weeds, twigs and branches comes into contact with an unclod appendage, much pain and blood results.

And when firing up the propane grill, it's always a good idea to check to make sure the hoses are still in good shape. Which, I did not do. And which resulted in the entire grill being engulfed in flame. Luckily the propane tank didn't blow, but I will be at the Home Depot this weekend buying another grill. If anyone is interested in a "modern art" sculpture of melted plastic and metal, well, c'mon over.

Apocalypse Soon


The other day was Earth Day and everyone had their 24 hour feel good moment. And now it's back to your regular programming. I especially like this rancid bag of pus, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who is AGAINST Flourescent light bulbs and FOR leaded gas! At this point, why don't the Republikkkans just show their cloven hooves and horns and get it over with.

Meanwhile, gas is over four bucks a gallon, the war is still on and worst of all, freakin beer prices are skyrocketing.

It's the end of days, kiddies... so grab a seat and embrace the apocalypse.

Spring Fever

It's getting to the warm weather stage here in en why cee and that means the workin' wimmen of said town are discarding the overcoats and flashin' their finest. Springtime, when the thoughts of a young man turn to... well, they turn to whiplash. And walkin' into poles and hydrants as one gets distracted by all the boobage and leggage.
Yeah, it's sexist, but I don't care. If ya don't like it, go write a letter to this fine example of womanhood. She'll have plenty of spare time soon enuff.

Besides, happily married me can only look anyway. And don't put the wares in the display if ya don't want us to do a little window shoppin'!

So, today's post is dedicated to the fairer sex.

Sick as a dog with a nasty cold (thanks to Nazz jr.) and back problems as sciatica is kicking my arse (also due to the newly invented sport of base/foot/basketball invented by Nazz jr. and myself).

The Hardest Job Is Finding One...


Personnel moves in Corporate Hades have been particularly draining as of late. I had to dispose of one person who reported to me for over a decade. It was well deserved, and I had no recourse, but nonetheless it was not a pleasurable experience.

As a result, I am now in the process of attempting to hire for two positions. As stressful as it is to be the interviewee, it is no big thrill having to do the interviewing either. You are sitting across from someone who's usually desperate for a job and who will say anything to get said job. So, I have to sell the person on how wonderful my company is, while attempting to engage my bullshit detector to make sure it's the right person.

Obviously, it's better to be on my side of the desk, but it's a real pain in the arse to go through the effort of speaking to a dozen or so people and take the chance on hiring one of em and hoping it works out.

Plus, I always feel guilty when I am looking at someone who has no chance in Hell of getting hired.
Time for another interview.

Never Go Too Far, Without A Little Big Star


Perhaps best known for supplying the theme song ("In The Street") to TV's "That 70's Show" , Big Star was a tremendously influential band that bridged the Beatles pop sensibilities with a 1970's Power Pop feel.

If every era has their building blocks, than Big Star certainly qualify as a major inspiration to 80's bands such as The Bangles, REM and The Replacements. Led by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, Big Star never achieved the success that they deerved (due largely to record label troubles) and were only a working band for about 4 years (1971-1974). However, their original three albums: Big Star, Radio City and Third are all classics and should be sought out.
Bell died in an auto accident in 1978 and Chilton has periodically brought the band out of retirement for one-off's.
I am offering up an entire disk's worth of Big Star demo's and outtakes for your listening pleasure.

Reggae De Blanc


What do Jerry Garcia and Rancid have in common? Well, aside from kick ass bass players and a San Francisco pedigree, not very much. Except of course, for a healthy respect for Reggae music.

The early punks were influenced by Reggae as well, it seemed that it was almost mandatory for the old school Brits to dabble in the genre (Clash, SLF, Generation X, Slits, etc). And the late 70's Two Tone scene certainly was a direct result of Reggae.

Here are some prime exhibits of white boys doing the Reggae thang.
