The Greatest Band Performance On TV - Ever!
Back in the mid 80's (January 1986) as they were being "pushed" towards commercialization by Sire. The Replacements came back on later in the show to do "Kiss Me On The Bus". Westerberg, Tommy and Mars swapped clothes. No one wanted to wear Bob's jumpsuit, which at that point had ripped down to his pubes. Between the drunkenness and the cursing (right before the guitar break, Westerberg yells "motherfucker" at Bob), it would be a long time until they were asked back.

A stone classic.
The music was perfect, and I remember laughing my ass off through both songs. The best.
Damn. The Mats were "on" for this performance. Those guitars sound like chainsaws.
Although the "motherfucker" line doesn't quite match its own legend. I always thought Westerberg dropped it into the lyrics, but here I see he says it off mic. Still a good story.
Plus Harry Dean Stanton on the intro. Perfect.
Perfect!
They really were the best band ever.
rumor has it that Harry Dean Stanton was almost as wasted as the 'mats were!
Brilliant find
Those SNL lawyer-sharks have managed to keep this off YouTube for ages.
That was great!
and when Westerberg sings "the ones that love us the least are the ones we'll die to please" and he winks at the camera....
chills.
I forgot why but this episode of SNL was pre-empted by something else and it did nit show in....Minneapolis of all plaCES. The tv station was swamped with calls and replayed it because the local boys were on.
