Friday Grab Bag - Taxman, Mr. Thief

Here in the good old U$A, we're coming up on Tax Day (April 15). This is the date when last year's personal income tax "debt$" must be settled up. Whether or not the U$A is legally entitled to collect income tax is up for debate. However, as "good citizens", we ante up around 35% of our salaries every year, to pay for wars, pork barrelling and other government largesse.

In honor, here are some songs reflecting this season of Federal ass-raping.

Tenacious D - The Government Totally Sucks
The Sonics - Money
The Vandals - Money's Not An Issue
Clutch - Money (Pink Floyd Cover)
The Kinks - The MoneyGoRound
Kraut - Kill For Cash
NOFX - Murder The Government

I've never got my head round the American system. Do you have to pay a lump sum at year end (April 15th)? What happens if you haven't allowed for 35%? Why isn't the money taken at source (ie. pay packet) over 12 monthly instalments?

the money is taken out of paychecks all year if you work for a corporation. if you freelance, you gotta keep track on your own. however, income tax return forms need to be filled out between jan 1 and april 15. that's when you either pay (if you've held back $$$) or get a return (if you paid too much- which means you've lent the gov't money and received no interest).
